Thirty-five fraudulent instructions were issued by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Security_hackers\">security hackers<\/a>\u00a0via the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SWIFT\">SWIFT<\/a>\u00a0network to illegally transfer close to US$1 billion from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Reserve_Bank_of_New_York\">Federal Reserve Bank of New York<\/a>\u00a0account belonging to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh_Bank\">Bangladesh Bank<\/a>, the central bank of Bangladesh. Five of the thirty-five fraudulent instructions were successful in transferring US$101 million, with US$81 million traced to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippines\">Philippines<\/a>\u00a0and US$20 million to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/a>. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York blocked the remaining thirty transactions, amounting to US$850 million, due to suspicions raised by a misspelled instruction.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh_Bank_robbery#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As of 2025, only US$15 million out of US$81 million transferred to the Philippines has been recovered with little progress in recovering the remaining US$66 million<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh_Bank_robbery#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>, and all the money transferred to Sri Lanka has since been recovered.
